I stayed a month in Ghana working with TANF Ghana. I learnt a huge amount in my visit and experienced a completely different culture from my own. Hearing the children sing and dance in class was a highlight. In the weekdays I helped the teachers with the children in the classrooms. I found the teaching difficult, as it is very different from what I am used to and hard work in the heat, but I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the kids and learnt just as much from them as they did from me. On the weekends I had free time and was able to visit different areas along Ghana’s coast. This free time was a gift and enabled me to explore and learn even more and added diversity to what I was seeing – instead of being in one place all the time. Overall a very positive experience and one that shaped who I am as a person now. Definitely would recommend to anyone who is interested in working in Africa with children and immersing yourself in their culture.
